BIOGRAPHIE<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Bien que le dessin soit le médium qu’elle a longtemps privilégié, Marie-Claire Blais travaille également la sculpture et la peinture. Elle concentre principalement ses activités de création sur l’expression de notre relation intime à l’espace et au monde qui nous entoure. Intéressée par la mémoire et l’état actuel de nos connaissances, passant par les chemins de la science et de la philosophie, elle cherche à représenter cette relation complexe en abordant le commun et l’universel, et en se référant à des échelles temporelles et physiques qui nous sont étrangères, qui nous imposent, par leur grandeur, un sentiment de fragilité et d’humilité. Elle se voue à une approche qui engage le corps, l’espace et le temps, et qui génère à même l’action une actualisation des prémisses conceptuelles de l’œuvre. Elle prône l’inconnu et célèbre l’immatérialité par une production qui combine la propension de l’air et la matière solide. La nature fragile du processus de fabrication et l’apparente solidité des formes utilisées empruntent au langage de la géométrie et de la mathématique de l’espace. Utilisée à l’état de particule, la matière est filtrée par des objets installés à plat ou dans l’espace, servant d’interface à la production d’images. Le choix de masquer ou de révéler certaines parties de l’image s’inspire du procédé photographique du tirage. La lumière occupe une place prépondérante dans son travail comme véhicule d’existence. Cette approche, qui se réinvente sur elle-même, permet de pervertir la notion de limite entre les éléments. Chaque projet est une occasion renouvelée de s’interroger sur la relation de l’homme à son environnement, en revisitant les schèmes culturels d’appropriation de l’espace et de mise en scène du regard.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Née à Lévis, Marie-Claire Blais a d’abord fait une formation en architecture à l’Université de Montréal pour ensuite se concentrer à plein temps sur une production en arts visuels. Elle vit et travaille à Montréal.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

BIOGRAPHY<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Although drawing is the medium she has long favored, Marie-Claire Blais also works with sculpture and painting. Her creative activities focus on the expression of our intimate relationship to space and the world around us. She is interested in memory and our actual understanding of the world as seen through the pursuits of science and philosophy. She seeks to represent this complex interrelation: approaching the common and the universal in context of scales of time and physical existence which are alien to us and impose, by their greatness, a sense of fragility and humility. She is committed to an artistic practice that involves the body, space, and time, and which generates, by itself, an update of the conceptual premises of her work. She advocates the unknown and celebrates immateriality through a production that combines the characteristics of air and solid materials. The fragile nature of the process and the apparent solidity of the forms borrow from the language of geometry and mathematical space. Utilised in the form of particles, material is filtered through objects installed flat or in space, serving as an interface for the production of the final images. The choice of what parts of the image are hidden or revealed is based on the photographic process of printing. Light figures as a predominant medium for existence in her work. This approach provides the basis for reinvention, allowing her to pervert the notion of boundaries between elements. Each project is a new opportunity to question the relationship of the spectator to their environment, revisiting the cultural patterns of appropriation of space and the staging of the gaze. Born in Levis, Marie-Claire Blais first completed a degree in architecture at the University of Montreal before focusing full-time on her visual arts production. She lives and works in Montreal.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
