Serena Beaulieu vit et travaille à Montréal.

Les tableaux géométriques de Serena Beaulieu se définissent par une investigation des effets de couleur et de forme. L’observation quotidienne de son environnement —de l’architecture et des objets — agit comme point de départ pour ses compositions géométriques simplifiées. Utilisant non seulement la face avant du support, mais également les côtés du tableau, elle crée de subtiles illusions qui soulignent la qualité tridimensionnelle des formes peintes ou des aspects physiques du panneau lui-même. Elle subvertit simultanément cette accentuation en aplatissant les formes, en employant des ratios inexacts ou en laissant par endroit des zones non peintes.

L’acrylique ou l’huile sont appliquées en fines couches, permettant au grain du bois de transparaître. À certains endroits, les traces d’une sous-couche de couleur différente sont laissées afin de révéler les décisions prises en cours de peinture. Beaulieu travaille souvent en série: elle explore différents formats et épaisseurs de panneaux de façon à faire dévier la perception de l’objet d’art chez l’observateur. Les tableaux visent à activer une attention au détail ainsi qu’à l’interprétation matérielle et individuelle projetée, qui donne sens à l’objet.

Serena Beaulieu lives and works in Montreal.

The geometric paintings of Serena Beaulieu, are defined by an ongoing investigation into the effects of color and form. Observations of her everyday surroundings, of architecture and objects, act as the starting point for her simplified geometric compositions. Utilizing not only the front of the support, but also the paintings’ sides, she creates subtle illusions that emphasize the three-dimensional quality of the painted shapes or physical aspects of the panel itself. At the same time she subverts this emphasis by flattening the shapes, using inexact ratios/or by leaving traces of the wooden support unpainted.

Acrylic, or oil is applied in very thin layers, allowing the grain of the wood to be apparent. At times, traces of a different coloured undercoat are left to show the decisions made in the process of painting. Beaulieu often works in series: she explores different sizes, and thicknesses of panels, in a way that would deviate the viewers’ perceptions of the art object. The paintings aim to activate an awareness to detail; as to material and individual interpretation, giving a meaning to the object.
